Summer Term 2025
Welcome back to Shamrocks Year 5/6 - Summer Term 2025!
We hope you had a wonderful Easter break and are well-rested ready for the Summer Term!
The Shamrocks Staff Team:
- Mrs Holmes - Class Teacher
- Mrs Edwards - Teaching Assistant Monday-Friday a.m.
- Mr Dyhouse - Teaching Assistant Monday-Friday
History – Windrush
This term, our History focus is on the Windrush Generation. We’ll explore the historical context of the Windrush arrival, the experiences of Caribbean migrants, and the contributions they made to British society. This topic will help the children develop empathy and a deeper understanding of diversity and inclusion in modern Britain.
English – Class Novel & Reading Mastery
In English, we will be reading the powerful novel Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah. This text links closely to our History topic and will provide rich opportunities for discussion, comprehension, and writing. Alongside our class novel, children will continue to develop their reading fluency and comprehension through Reading Mastery sessions.
Science – Animals Including Humans
Our Science topic is Animals Including Humans, with a focus on the changes that happen as humans grow from birth to old age. We will look at stages of human development, including puberty, and how our bodies and needs change over time. This unit will be taught sensitively and age-appropriately, in line with the science curriculum.
Art – Printing
In Art, we’ll be exploring printing techniques, inspired by William Morris. The children will experiment with block printing, and layered designs, culminating in their own unique printed artwork
Homework
Homework will continue to focus on consolidating key skills:
-
TT Rockstars: Children should aim to practise their times tables regularly throughout the week.
-
Reading: We ask that children read at least three times a week at home, recording this in their reading records. Reading aloud to an adult and discussing the text will greatly support their understanding and vocabulary development.
As always, thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns about the term ahead, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
