We are going to take part in the RSPB's Big School's Garden Birdwatch towards the end of January. https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/big-garden-birdwatch Today we did a bit of preparation. We fed the birds with dried mealworms (Blackbirds love this food), peanuts (for the Finches) and sunflower hearts (for smaller garden birds like Bluetits). We discussed where to position our bird hide and collected camouflage to disguise it, so the birds won't get spooked by it. We had enough time to do some fun adventurous activities of our own.

Daffodils were pleased to welcome Fire Officer James Lewis into school to give us an update on how to stay safe in our homes and how to protect our families should a fire break out.
The Daffodils crew were very knowledgeable and had remembered lots from a previous visit. They were reminded to check that smoke alarms were in good working order and to keep keys for double glazed windows close to hand. They were asked to discuss with parents, a sensible fire escape route to use at home in an emergency. The tactic to use if your clothes are on fire is still, "Stop, drop and roll!" Thank you for sharing your good advice James. Our mantle of the expert story began with an encounter with John Lennon. He explained that The Beatles have been asked to write a song for the very first satellite broadcast for the BBC. How do you think The Beatles would have felt knowing that their song was going to be heard all over the world? I wonder what they would want to say to the whole world? We imagined we were The Beatles and created a still image of John Lennon and Paul McCartney writing their new song. We found out from the BBC that the song was being transmitted in four days time. We heard from John Lennon again as he wrote the song 'All you need is love'. The BBC needed to work quickly to get the studio ready for the broadcast. I wonder what roles the team would have? Set up the drums Guitar tuning Check microphones Sound technicians Cameras Director Costume designers Props and staging Promotion and advert for the broadcast Lighting Speakers and amplifiers The team needed to work quickly to get the studio set up ready for The Beatles broadcast. 1960's Pop ArtWe began looking at some 1960's Pop Art and discussing what we liked about it and what we noticed about the work. We wrote and sketched some of our thoughts.
We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and ready to start another exciting term in Daffodils. This half term we will be learning about the 1960's. Through our Mantle of the Expert narrative, we will be discovering how The Beatles were asked by the BBC to broadcast their song 'All you need is love', this was to be the first satellite broadcast across the world and a huge historical moment. We will also be exploring 1960's fashion and the influential designer Mary Quant. Art
As part of our 1960s topic, we will be looking at pop art and the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Litchenstien. We will even create our own pop art inspired pieces of work! Science. This half term we will be learning about Uses of Everyday Materials. We will be comparing and grouping materials depending on their physical properties. We will be describing why certain materials are used for certain items and what the effect would be if the material was to be swapped e.g. a wooden, metal or plastic kitchen spoon. PE PE will continue to be on alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure PE kits are brought into school on a Monday and then taken home on a Friday. PE kits should include plain coloured shorts and jogging bottoms, white or navy t-shirt, trainers and a plain sweatshirt. Please make sure these are clearly named as things can get mixed up whilst getting changed! Always check weekly reminder for the correct day. Outdoor learning We will be using the forest school every other Tuesday. We will be going out in all weather, so please make sure kits include plenty of layers (Water proof coats and trousers, jogging bottoms, jumper, gloves and hat. Please no jeans, as these can be uncomfortable if they get wet) Again, make sure kits are clearly labelled. Reading. We will change books once a week and children can take home a book to enjoy. Please make sure book bags are in school every day. It is lovely to read your comments in reading diaries, even if we don’t respond, we always read them! We are looking forward to another busy half term. Our time travel topic is going to be an exciting one, so if you have anything from the 1960’s that we might be interested in, please let us know! Mrs Humphreys, Mrs Kavanagh and Mrs McTweed A gentle start with making some named beaded bracelets. An oldie, but a goldie - Stations game with a bit of dancing. Pin the nose on Rudolph and fantastic party food. Thank you to our parents for helping us to have a super Christmassy feast. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas from the Daffodils class. See you in 2024! D&T ProjectWe discovered that researchers in the Antarctic took a small piece of chocolate with them out on their expeditions for energy. SO, we decided to make some of our own Christmas chocolates! From the South Pole to the North Pole...We went on a magical journey to the North Pole on the Polar Express.....
Our lovely Forest School was very cold and 'wintery' today. The starlings were noisy, all trying to roost together and share their warmth with each other. We took a walk around to find interesting grasses and seed heads, brown shrivelled up leaves or twigs and anything that would suit our Christmas bouquet. We had a variety of cones to pick from - Norway Spruce, Larch, Scots Pine. They had a lovely 'evergreen' pine smell. We arranged our bouquet into a glass jar and added the finishing touches with sparkly wool, pipe cleaners and Christmas baubles. Maybe we could go into the floristry business?
Daffodils class represented the school wonderfully today when they went to sing for the staff and children at Hope House. We were so lucky to be able to walk around their winter wonderland too! Christmas dinner! Our Christmas celebrations began today with a visit from Mrs Webber. She brought to life the Christmas story with six different boxes telling each story of Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, the star, the shepherds and the Angels. Celebrating good work in Daffodils |
