Vision for Coding and ICT
The vision for Coding and ICT at Morda is to ensure that all children leave the school with the ability to code. So much of ICT has focussed on the acquiring skills in the use of hardware and software products. While proficiency in these skills is important, modern products have become more and more intuitive in their user interfaces, leading to many children quickly acquiring skills beyond those of their parents.
The country has a great need to fill the significant national skills gaps in STEM. Morda children could benefit from fulfilling and well-paid careers in STEM occupations if they arrive at secondary school with the skills, knowledge and a positive attitude towards coding. Learning coding skills discretely using the excellent resources available online also greatly benefits children’s Maths reasoning skills. Children gather skills in the use of tablets and laptops and related software through their use across the curriculum
Curriculum Design and Pedagogical Approach
Coding is currently a scarce skill both for primary students and teachers. The approach to teaching and learning needs to provide a great deal of support for teachers to provide the best learning possible. On advice from ICT and Coding experts the school uses the Code.org website to provide lessons for students. This resource is a comprehensive learning program taking the children through from Year 1 to Year 6. Sequences of learning are clearly set out building on prior skills. The school also has access to the Scratch coding system on our laptops which some teachers will make use of as the children progress and their own skills develop.
