Our art work this term will be influenced by the work of the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. We looked at some of her work on flowers and and discussed what we liked or felt about the work. We then studied some flowers and made some observational drawings.

We were visited by a dental nurse who told us how to look after our teeth. She talked about having a good diet and how to brush our teeth correctly. We were given a chart to keep check on when we brushed our teeth and to make sure we brush them twice a day. Cricket workshopAs part of our PE session we took part in a cricket workshop. We learnt some of the skills required to play cricket. Our Victorian Morda story continuesWe met Elizabeth again, she read from her diary which told us all about her awful day in the workhouse and some of the things that had happened. We wanted to find out more about what life would have been like in Morda workhouse, so we did some research to find out who would have lived in the workhouse and what they would have done. A happy ending to our Morda workhouse storyWhen we met Elizabeth again, she appeared happier. She had arranged an amateur dramatics performance to raise money for the workhouse. The money that was raised would buy musical instruments for the children at the workhouse. We got into role as Elizabeth, and showed what it would have felt like to have put on the performance. Our science investigation - What do plants need to grow?We began planning our science investigation - what do plants need to grow. We used our planning board with our talk partner and discussed what we would keep the same, what we would change and make predictions about what would happen in the investigation. We planted seeds and placed one without light, one without water and one without oxygen. We will monitor the seeds through out the week to see what happens! We also started planting our sunflower seeds. I wonder whose sunflower will grow the tallest?
Welcome back to the start of the summer term. Hope that you have all had a restful break and ready to start learning. We began our new history topic, Victorian Morda, by meeting Elizabeth, who worked as a teacher at Morda Work house over 100 years ago. We listened to her story and then asked questions to find out more about her. We're going on an egg hunt, we're going to find a big one..... Reverend Harvey led our assembly today and read us the Easter story.
What happens when you don’t feel safe in school? If you haven’t feel safe in school, what kinds of things would cause that feeling? We talked about things that made us feel unsafe in school and what we can do when this happens. These are some of our thoughts. I feel unsafe in school when: "The fire alarm goes off" "Felt unsafe when I got injured" "When someone hit me" "When people hit or push me" "When I get angry" Most children in daffodils class found this tricky, as we said that we feel safe in school. "I love being in school because we have a lovely classroom" "I always feel safe in school" "I don't know what to write because I am happy in school" Year 2 reading in DaffodilsThe year 2 children have been enjoying visiting the library. We are able to read different books and enjoy them with our friends.
If we were to plan the canal clean up operation, what would we need to do? What jobs would need to be done? After watching a short video clip of the restoration work that was done on the Montgomery canal near Oswestry, we decided on the work that needed to be carried out. We decided on which role we wanted to do and then set to work on the clear up operation! . During the clean up operation there was a huge leak and no water in most parts of the canal. The team received a telephone call with the news that there has been a leak and we needed to action something immediately. We watched a video clip of the sink hole which had caused the leak. We discovered the location of the leak in the over-flow section and identified where the sink hole had appeared. Workers had already stared work on the dam when we arrived. Once the dam had been put in place, we got to work straight away on fixing the sink hole. PSHE - Secrets and surprisesThe children thought about when they have had a surprise and a time when they have known about a surprise for someone else. We discussed that sometimes people confuse secrets and surprises. A secret is often something bad that someone does not want other people to find out about. It might be something they have done wrong and they know other people will be hurt or cross when they find out, or it might be something unkind. We looked at pictures of different scenarios and discusses whether they thought it was a secret or a surprise. Science - States of MatterWe have been investigating the properties of solids, liquids and gases. In our science area, we need to decide which objects are solids, liquids and which are gases. We explored what happens to particles in a solid, liquid and gases.
We had such an amazing time at The Beatles museum, we wanted to write thank you letters to our guides Nick, Amy and Connor to say what we had enjoyed the most. Here are just a few of our lovely letters. PSHE - Emotional regulationFor our PSHE session this week, we had a visit from Tanya who came to talk to us about how we can self regulate and control our emotions. We listened to different scenarios and decided which emotional zone we would be in. We even took part in some meditation and sat like frogs! We are going to continue with this mindfulness technique and call it 'Frog Friday'!
History - The 1960'sTo complete our history topic on 'the 1960's' we visited The Beatles museum in the Albert docks. It enabled us to consolidate all of our learning and be able to become immersed in the 1960's popular culture. We were able to make links from our learning to the exhibitions and activities. We even dressed up as the Beatles and played in the famous Cavern bar! Geography - LiverpoolTo introduce our geography topic, we explored part of the city of Liverpool. We focused on the Albert docks area and the canal system around Liverpool. We also visited the iconic Liver building and Cunard building. We looked around the skyline of the city and compared new and old buildings sitting side by side. We even spotted the old cathedral and new cathedral. To enhance our learning on the canal system, we visited the museum of Liverpool and looked at how, throughout history, the canal system has changed. Our trip has been a wonderful introduction to Liverpool, but more importantly, despite the rain, we had a brilliant time and so much fun!
We enter the story before the canal has had restoration work done to it. The canal is overgrown with rubbish and shopping trollies in it. People are throwing rubbish into the canal and there is algae, and bridges and locks are falling down. How does it make us feel? “I feel angry, why are people throwing rubbish in the canal?” “I feel anxious that animals might be in danger from all of the rubbish” “I am disappointed that people are doing this” “It makes me feel sad” “I am worried about the animals” “It makes me want to do something about it” ……… We went back as a group to discuss some of the skills we would need to clean up the canal and to restore the canal and make it a better place to be. “We need to be able to swim and Scuba dive” “We need to be able to dive to see what damage is under the water” “We need litter pickers to collect the equipment” “Knowledge of what equipment to use and be able to use it” “What to do with the rubbish and how to recycle it safely” “Know how to drain the water away to make sure it is clean” Pancake day in Daffodils!Would you like chocolate sauce or lemon and sugar with your pancake?
This week in Daffodils we have learnt about the importance of sleep and how it can affect us in many ways, both physically and mentally. We were joined by BEAM every morning, who helped us with coping techniques, getting better sleep and why we need a good night sleep. They talked to us about the five ways to well being and understanding our emotions. We watched a clip from the Disney film Inside out to show us how our emotions change the way we react and behave in certain situations and why its ok to feel certain emotions, it's how we deal with them. We had a visitor from Shropshire children's mental health team, who read us the story 'How to fill my bucket' which is all about how to be kind and make people feel better. We now have our own bucket which we can fill every time someone fills our bucket or we fill theirs! Yoga is a way of becoming more mindful and a way to relax. We were so lucky to be able to have a session of yoga to show us how we could do it at home. To end our pyjama day we were joined by Siobhan from Oswestry library to read us some bed time stories. We listened to some of our favourites Peace at last and Where's my Teddy! PSHE - Internet safetyRichard Smith talked to us about how we can be safe online. We viewed an online game and discussed what we thought was safe about it and what wasn't safe about it. He told us about what to do if we thought something wasn't safe. There is more information about internet safety on his website www.amazingict.co.uk
