Daffodils - What are the signs and symbols of Christmas?

11/23/2022

Daffodils thought about how they know Christmas is on its way, how do they know? We talked about advent and how Christian's celebrate it, and what type of pictures appear on Christmas cards. We saw a lot of Nativity scenes, stars, wise men, Christmas trees and Father Christmas. The children decided to create surprising Christmas cards using some of the ideas they saw...

We talked about how we celebrate Christmas in our homes today. Macy told us she will have an advent calendar, Dexter said he has a special roast dinner and we ALL have presents! We then had a vey important job to do: making Christmas cards to give to someone special! The children also shared Christmas toys such as the Nativity playmobil, decorating a Christmas tree, Father Christmas Duplo and creating Christmas pictures!

This afternoon the Bluebells class thought really carefully about how we celebrate our own birthdays and how we celebrate Jesus birthday. We noticed that there are lots of things we do for our own and Jesus birthday like sending cards, eating special meals, having parties and even having presents!

In Daffodils this afternoon we compared and contrasted how we all celebrate Christmas. There were many common elements, such as having Christmas trees, presents and special food. Maja told us how her family eat lots of fish for their Christmas dinner, whilst Amelia has a turkey roast dinner! We listened to the Christmas story and talked about why Christmas is important to Christians. Here are our retold versions of the story...

Daffodils - Why is Jesus important to Christians?

The children in Daffodils recapped their knowledge of the Christmas Story - Who was baby Jesus? Why is he important? Who else was important in the story and why. We began to create some comic style recounts of the story, thinking carefully about the story sequence, what the characters might say and how they might look.

Bluebells - Why do Christians perform Nativity plays at Christmas?

As a class, the Bluebells retold the Christmas story, taking on different roles and thinking about what the characters might have said and done. The Year Ones then retold the story using pictures and words. Reception children retold the story using pictures, playdough and playmobile.  (Reception storytelling below)
