Science - Earth and Space

Shamrocks have been learning all about Earth and Space in our Science this half term. To finish off our topic we had a practical lesson where we carried out lots of practical activities and demonstrations to show what we have learnt about Earth and Space.

• The Earth, sun and moon are roughly spherical (the Earth is not flat as was once believed).
• The sun is at the centre of our solar system.
• There are 8 planets which orbit in elliptical orbits around the sun.
• Each planet takes a different amount of time to orbit the sun (depending on how close to the sun it is).
• Earth takes 365 1/4 days to make one full orbit of the sun.
• The Earth rotates on its axis. It takes 24hours to make one full rotation.
• Day and night is caused by only part of the Earth facing the sun (daytime) and the other half facing away from the sun (night time).
• The moon is not a light source, it reflects light from the sun.
• The moon has eight lunar phases (depending on its position in relation to the sun and Earth).
• The moon orbits the Earth, it takes 29.5 days to make a full orbit of the Earth.
