14/09/2021 WELCOME TO THE SHAMROCKS SEPTEMBER 2021
It is great to have all the children back after the difficult 18 months we have had – hopefully we won’t have to have any more online learning. We have had a fantastic start to the term and the children have settled in very well; the children are working extremely hard!
This term we will be learning about the early Islamic civilisation. Through our Mantle of the Expert we will discover what life was like in the round city of Baghdad. We will be exploring key events before and during the Abbasid caliphate rule, and the House of Wisdom and the impact Baghdad had on education.
Geography In the second half of the term we will be studying India as a none-European comparison to the UK. Studying land use and industry, weather, climate and Biomes.
Science First half of the term we will be discovering all about Earth and Space. The second half of the term will be learning about electricity.
In literacy we will cover a range of fiction and non-fiction reading and writing genres which will be inspired by our Mantle of the Expert on early Islamic civilisation as well as our class novel, “The Golden Horsemen of Baghdad” by Savoir Pirotta.
Thirteen-year-old Jabir is hoping to save his family from being made homeless by finding work in Baghdad. Famished after his long journey to the city, Jabir is caught stealing bread and sent to prison. Luckily, one of the guards there notices that he has a gift for carving wooden models and he is released on the orders of the grand caliph Harun al Rashid himself.
In return Jabir must carve twelve golden horsemen, a gift from the caliph to the emperor Charlemagne. But someone is determined to stop Jabir from completing the work and he will stop at nothing, not even arson, to achieve his aim. Can Jabir and his friend Yasmina finish the horsemen or will Jabir be sent back to prison?
It would be useful for every child to have their own copy of “The Golden Horsemen of Baghdad” to read in school. A copy can be purchased through school for the discounted price of £5 (£5.64 Amazon price). Please see order form below- Please return completed slips and payment to the school office by Monday 20th September.
Alternatively, some children in the past have used Oswestry’s fantastic library to get a copy of the book.
Regular reading at home is incredibly important for your child. Your child will be asked to read and talk about their book with an adult at home regularly. This will be your child’s weekly homework. A reading record will be sent home for the children to sign and make comments about the book they are reading when they have read independently. Adults can also sign the reading record and make comments when you have read with your child. We encourage you to ask questions about the book as this helps your child with their understanding.
TT ROCKS Your child will continue with weekly times table practise homework on TT Rocks - this helps with the recall and fluency of multiplication and divisional facts. A reminder slip with your child’s log in details has already gone home. I will be challenging them often and they can even challenge me!
PE Our timetabled PE sessions will be alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children to bring their kit to school and to change before PE.
We are looking forward to an awesome term.
If you have any concerns, please know that my door is always open for a chat.
Kind Regards Mr Darbyshire
