Welcome to Shamrocks Autumn 2025

Team Shamrocks this year is made up of Mrs Holmes (Class Teacher), Mrs Edwards (Teaching Assistant a.m.) and Mr Dyhouse (Teaching Assistant am and pm)

We are thrilled to welcome your child to Shamrocks Class. I’d like to take this opportunity to share some of the wonderful topics and activities we’ll be exploring this half term.

History: The Golden Age of Islam
This term in History, we’ll travel back to the Golden Age of Islam—a period of extraordinary advancements in science, art, medicine, and education. The children will explore the significance of Baghdad as a centre of learning, and investigate how this remarkable era has influenced the modern world.

Science:
Earth and Space
We begin with an awe-inspiring look into our solar system. Children will explore the movement of planets, the phases of the moon, and the reasons behind day and night. They’ll develop their enquiry skills through hands-on investigations and model-making.

Art: Islamic Patterns
In Art, we will take inspiration from the intricate Islamic patterns found in architecture, textiles, and manuscripts. This unit will help children explore symmetry, geometry, and cultural expression, while developing their fine motor and design skills.

Reading Comprehension: Class Novel – The Golden Horsemen of Baghdad
Our class novel this term is the historical adventure The Golden Horsemen of Baghdad by Saviour Pirotta. This rich and engaging story links beautifully with our History topic and will be a springboard for reading comprehension, discussion, and creative writing.

PE will take place every Monday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school on both days so they are prepared to take part. This term, we will focus on a variety of activities that build fitness, teamwork, and coordination.

Homework
Reading
Regular reading at home is essential for your child’s progress. Each child is expected to read with an adult at least three times a week. They will bring home a reading record where they (and you) can log and comment on their reading. Asking questions and discussing the story really helps to build understanding and vocabulary. We expect all Year 6 children to have at least 1 comment from an adult in their Reading Record each week and Year 5 children to have at least 3 comments from an adult in their Reading Record each week. We will be collecting the reading records in every Friday to see who has been working hard on their reading at home.

TT Rock Stars
Weekly times tables homework will continue through TT Rock Stars. Regular practice helps children improve their speed and accuracy with multiplication and division facts, which supports learning across the curriculum. Children's individual Logins are stuck into thee front of their reading records as a reminder.
