Vision for Science Learning

INTENT:

At Morda Primary School, science is a joyful, hands‑on exploration of the world. We want every child—from Reception to Year 6—to develop curiosity, confidence, and a deep understanding of the natural and scientific world. Our mixed‑age classes are a strength: they create a family‑like environment where children learn collaboratively, share ideas, and support one another.

Our intent is to:

• nurture awe, wonder, and a lifelong love of discovery

• use our rural setting as a rich, living laboratory

• build secure scientific knowledge and vocabulary through a carefully sequenced curriculum

• develop strong enquiry skills so children can question, investigate, test, and reason

• ensure progression across mixed‑age classes, revisiting key concepts in increasingly sophisticated ways

• help every child see themselves as a scientist

IMPLEMENTATION:

Science learning is practical, purposeful, and enquiry‑led. Across all classes, children regularly engage in hands‑on investigations, outdoor learning, and real‑life scientific contexts.

How we deliver our curriculum:

• Reception/Year 1: learning through play, exploration, sensory experiences, and early questioning

• Year 1/2: developing independence in simple tests, noticing patterns, and using basic scientific vocabulary

• Year 3/4: building systematic enquiry skills, gathering evidence, and drawing conclusions

• Year 5/6: deepening conceptual understanding, refining investigative methods, and preparing for secondary science

IMPACT:

By the time children leave Morda Primary School, they are confident, curious, and capable young scientists. They have secure knowledge of key scientific concepts and can apply their enquiry skills independently.
