Dear Parent,
Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely summer break. May we wish you a warm welcome to year 4/5 ‘Roses class’. As you will already know- we have a slightly extended school day this year. The gate will open at 8.30am and registration will take place at 8.45am. This year Mrs Chapman will be teaching all day on a Monday and a Tuesday and on a Wednesday 10.45-12.15 and afternoon. Mrs O’Grady will be teaching on a Wednesday 8.45- 10.45 and all day on a Thursday and a Friday. History In our history we will be researching the wonders of Ancient China and in particular, the Shang dynasty. In our Mantle drama it is 1899, our team of archaeologists will meet a Chinese scholar called Wang Yirong who falls ill with malaria and is prescribed ‘dragon bones’ These ancient bones contain the secrets of the Shange Dynasty. Our job will be to find out if the legends of the Shang kings are true… As part of our research, we have planned an exciting interactive live link to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford to explore their Shang Dynasty artifacts. Literacy Our Literacy will be inspired by our enchanting Chinese class novel, ‘When the Mountain meets the Moon’ by Grace Lin. It tells the story of a poor Chinese girl Minli and her quest to find the Old Man of the Moon and change her family’s fortune. There are many wonderful myths and legends told along the way and on her journey, she meets a magical Chinese dragon. We will be reading the novel in school most days and it would be helpful if you would like to buy a copy of the novel for your child. The books can be purchased second hand through ebay – or if you wish to order through school, we can provide new books at the discounted price of £6. Art Our artwork this term will be inspired by ancient Chinese story-telling masks. Children will be looking at pictures of the masks, studying their features and learning why they were made and worn. The children will then design and make their own Chinese story-telling mask using cardboard relief techniques. Our DT project, after the half term break, will be to design and make heathy Chinese food. Science Mrs O’Grady will be teaching science this term. Your child will be learning about Sound during the first half term. The children are going to find out what sound is, how we hear sounds, how sound travels and how sounds can change in volume and pitch. After half term, the children will learn about Electricity. They will be finding out how electricity is generated, how to keep safe around electrical appliances, exploring different types of circuits and finding out about conductors and insulators. Geography In the second half of the Autumn term we will be studying the Geography of modern China; in particular the Yangtze and Yellow River and their impact on the natural and human geography of China. French We will be teaching French as our modern foreign language and continue using the fantastic fun KAPOW scheme to deliver these lessons. HOMEWORK Reading at home: Regular reading at home and discussions about their book is essential to enable your child to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. We would want your child to be reading at home most evenings. Please ensure you sign your child’s book to show that they have read at home and talked about their book with you at least once a week. Reading record books will be handed in and checked on a Monday. Mrs Chapman will be holding a ‘catch up’ lunchtime reading session on Tuesday lunchtimes for any child who has not had their book signed to say they have read. TT ROCKS HOMEWORK Your child should be regularly practising their times tables at home by doing the TT Rocks games online. TTRocks gets to know your child and pitches the questions so that they are practising the right tables for them. GARAGE is the easiest game and the game that issues the most coins, which they can then spend in the virtual shop. If your child is in Year 4, they should begin to play the SOUNDCHECK game as this replicates the government TimesTables test that all Year 4’s sit in May. Playing the SOUNDCHECK game at home will mean that the children won’t be too daunted when faced with it in the summer term. Mrs O’Grady would love the children to challenge her on the ROCKSLAM game too. Mrs O’Grady will check each week that your child has been online to play the games. Children who have not been online will complete the paper TTRocks sheets during Thursday lunch times. PE Our timetabled PE sessions will be on alternate Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Occasionally we may have extra sessions at other times. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school (shorts, t-shirt, trainers, jogging bottoms) every week. PE kits should be brought in on Mondays and taken home for washing on Fridays. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know and we will arrange a meeting as soon as possible. We are looking forward to a fantastic term. Kind Regards Mrs Chapman and Mrs O’Grady
