Today we all had the opportunity to see Florence Nightingale’s uniform, her lamp and her wonderful medal. We compared the uniform to modern day NHS uniforms. We found that Florence Nightingales Victorian gown was long, flappy and itchy! We thought she might have got hot and bothered wearing this.
We were surprised by her lamp being made of fabric as this could cause a fire if the candle caught light. We are so glad now that nurses have proper lighting to see what they were doing in the dark wards and that they have better, less itchy uniforms. We thought about our value of fairness that her courage and compassion was rewarded with the medal. We think Florence Nightingale did an amazing courageous role, as did Mary Seacole. t.

We learnt that Florence Nightingale would have been 201 years old on 12.5.21. This date is also national nursing day. During a discussion a child said we should clap for them. We had a 1 minute clap in class. We have also made a Thank you banner to all the doctors and Nurses that help us. Some children made cards as well.
As History detective we want to know more about Florence Nightingale. When we stepped back in time into our Mantle of the Expert story we had a visit from Florence's mother. She told us she was terribly worried about Florence going to Scutari in Turkey on the long boat journey and caring for the wounded soldiers. We discussed the emotions that her mother must have been feeling. We had a lot of compassion for her mother and we gained clues on Florence's dertermination to do her job as a Nurse.
Later, we saw Florence writing to her mother and father. She gave us clues on her feelings and the terrible boat journey. She used the word 'fearful' we discussed this means scared and worried. After looking closely at a famous picture of the boat journey, we went on the boat to get a sense of how it must have been for the Nurses. There were rats and cockroaches around us and the boat rocked heavily on the rough sea. The journey took 8 days. We had great fun playing and exploring with the old Victorian toy box. We discovered old wooden toys such as a hobby horse, a ball and cup and a heavy wooden yoyo.
We discussed ways to keep safe in school. Pupils said not running on the walking path or when holding scissors. Always listen to a grown up in school and make sure we stay safe from strangers. We watched and discussed the safety video 'Stranger Danger'. Pupils discussed that strangers are people we do not know and have never seen before and our parents have not seen before either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEtJtFEVDbI click the link to watch the video again We continued to programme our friends and beebots by giving instructions to move somewhere else. This week we made a grid on the floor and had to give instructions by saying .. eg.: forwards 3, turn, forwards 2 etc.
We also enjoyed playing 'coding' and 'Kodable' on our school ipads. With our talking partners we made suggestions on how we can show kindness in our school. Suggestions included helping others if they fall over and writing cards to cheer people up.
