Florence Nightingale - History Detectives

Using Mantle of the Expert techniques we have become a team of History Detectives to follow Florence Nightingale to Scutari in Turkey in the Year 1854.  The children experienced the trip on the boat from England to Turkey, stopping off in Malta where they were all sea-sick and didn't leave the ship!

They then co-created the conditions in the hospital in Scutari.  There were many injured soldiers, a few surgeons working in filthy conditions and rats and cockroaches scurrying about.  Florence and her nurses were given a tour by the General Manager.  The children were shocked that Florence and her team were prevented from working in the hospital at first by the General Manager, who didn't think it was seemly to have women working in those conditions and that they wouldn't be able to help.  Florence eventually convinced him, with the backing of the British Government, and started her nursing transformation.
