Reading in DaffodilsIn Daffodils class, we have lots of opportunities to read and to enjoy reading. We have our lovely reading corner, which we can spend time in with a good book, or visit the library and share our favourite book with our friends. Once we have completed Read Write inc, we read as a group every day and discuss the story and answer questions about what we have read. We learn reading skills such as reading with fluency and using punctuation to add expression. Here we are enjoying our reading in Daffodils!
Daffodils welcomed a new willow friend to Mary's garden. The Oswestry branch of Shropshire Wildlife Trust have asked us to give 'The Hodgeheg' a good home for a while, and we are keen to learn more about hedgehogs. Coming soon - some amazing facts about Hedgehogs!!
We looked at pictures of various situations. We discussed the following questions - What is happening in each picture? Describe how they are feeling. Why do they feel like this? When have you felt like this? We then went on to think about our own actions and how they make people feel and what we can do to be kind. Is that Elephant Island in the distance?Maths fun!Using our mathematical knowledge in lots of different ways! Antarctic collagesOur Antarctic themed collages are beginning to look fantastic! Celebration assembly certificateWell done for fantastic knowledge about Ernest Shackleton!
We have been so lucky to have been visited today, by a real explorer who had explored the Antarctic, just like Ernest Shackleton and his crew had done over one hundred years ago. We found out about the journey he took and what he saw along the way and what equipment he took with him. What an amazing expedition!
The Autumn colours are beginning to show in our Forest School, mainly greens, yellows and browns at the moment. We collected samples of all the different shades we could find, ready to do some printing next time. We each had a special, shiny gift, all amazingly wrapped up in nature's own way! Brand new conkers! They are the fruits/nuts of the Horse Chestnut tree. We also had an acorn each, which is the fruit/nut of the Oak tree. We were surprised that the huge Horse Chestnut and Oak trees that we see in woods and fields all around us, begin their journey as a small conker or acorn. We finished our session with some adventurous activities and fun! We are all getting more confident and we enjoy building our friendships! Check out the smiles!
We began our collage today, by looking at various pictures of the Antarctic to inspire us. We decided how we would like our collage to look. We are obsessed with the Antarctic!Look at the wonderful things we have been doing at home! Watch out for the ice bergs!!Celebrating fantastic work in DaffodilsWe found out that sledging biscuits in Antarctica are one of the two foods that Antarctic exploration was built on, (the other is pemmican) they are still in use today, eaten by people who are working away from bases in Antarctica as a dietary staple. We watched some of Ben Fogle's expedition to the Antarctic, following in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton. As part of his expedition, he ate some of the sledging biscuits and pemmican. We decided to make some to see what they are really like and if we could survive on sledging biscuits! If you would like to try sledging biscuits at home, here is the recipe!
To begin our story of Ernest Shackleton's expedition, we needed to plan and put our story in order, then describe what Ernest might have been like. We came up with some adjectives to create a character description, which we could use in our story. To really imagine what it would have been like on the expedition, we looked at some of the kit Ernest would have taken with him and compared it to modern day kit. We even had a virtual tour of the research station in the Antarctic! Looking out for ice bergs......Celebration assembly certificateWell done for amazing work this week Daffodils class! Our knowledge of Ernest Shackleton's expedition is fantastic!
