Gender stereotypes
Today we had a class discussion on gender stereotypes. Together we looked at picture cards showing different activities such as crying, wearing skirts, dancing, liking the colour purple, dressing up as a pirate to name just a few. We had two hoops labelled a girl’s hoop and boy’s hoop. At first children placed the cards firmly in either hoop. Dancing was girls, dressing up as pirate was in the boy’s hoop. This is was interesting and we can comment such as ‘my brother does this’. ‘I like to do that’ Once the hoops were then overlapped our discussion changed and we started to see that some boys may want to wear a skirt and like the colour purple. We later moved all the picture cards into the middle and decided both genders can do both activities.
